Josh Meyer's DQ

Watch the news tonight and look for advertisements in an actual news broadcast. Choose two and explain the purpose behind them. Then give the target audience and see if there is a correlation to the particular ad being shown. If possible try to trace the company back to it’s parent company.

  1. Tonight I watched WDay 6 News at 6:00 pm. The two advertisements I saw was for Papa Murphy’s and Dairy Queen.

Right before the broadcast went to a commercial it threw in Papa Murphy’s to say it was brought to us by them. The news broadcast was during supper time when many parents are just getting home from work and wondering what to make for supper. Many parents are tired and want a quick meal. Papa Murphy’s is something quick you can grab and make without much work or cleanup. They may want Papa Murphy’s for tonight or it is a mental note to pick it up after work for tomorrow’s supper. The target audience is parents and can also be the kids that are watching the news because their parents are and at the same time kids are discussing their day and asking what their parents what's for supper.

DQ was also shown because they were giving away free sundaes from tonight. This showed their corporate social responsibility and also showed their thanks for the community support shown in the sandbagging efforts. This portrayed DQ positively, showed they appreciated their customers’ efforts and will help to increase their sales. Again, I would say the target audience would be parents and kids. Parents are avid news watchers and are more likely to bring their children to places that have a positive impact on the community and when kids see DQ on television their want for DQ increases.

  2. I watched the 10 o'clock news on channel 11. Here are the two commercials I saw:

Innovative basement Systems -- They were talking about "protecting your basements and increasing your investment" after major problems (which included flooding). This came during a broadcast that was almost completely about the flood. It also fell right after the recent announcement of the lower prediction. I think there is a direct correlation between the ad and the target audience. Most working families watch the 10 news because younger children have gone to bed. This is generally the same audience that owns homes. After the commercial break, the news did a large story about flood recovery.

McDonald moca -- This commercial was aired right before a coffeemaker recall. They had previewed the story before the break and right before it went to the story showed a commercial about McCafe Coffee. Again the target audience is the older individuals. Because of the foreshadowing of the coffee story people where thinking about coffee and then saw the ad.

  3. As I was watching GMA this morning I noticed a LOT of advertisements. The ones that caught my mind were for HuHot and The Good Will.
Huhot’s advertisement seemed to have a lot of middle aged people in it talking about how they live such busy lives and the only thing they have time for is HuHot. They also showed us clips of the food and the appearance of the restaurant. On page 181, the book states “the strategy of an ad for food is generally to make the food appear as delectable as possible.” The other situation presented was that HuHot allows people to come back for second and thirds. I believe this ad was targeting working class people who probably don’t have much time for lunch, or those who have a hearty appetite.
The Good Will store seemed to target anyone who feel like they have too much stuff. Because it was on in the early morning I believe they are targeting middle-aged to older people. I think they do this because as we get older we do tend to accumulate unwanted items (clothes, furniture, etc…).
